areyougone

Areyougone and I are in Klickitat this weekend getting into the initial tracking for a great record. I’m very excited about the tones and performances we are getting. I’m tracking through the ’79 Neve console to the 2″ 16 track with lots of vintage amp and preamp distortion. Whoa, ’74 P-bass -> 60s Showman -> original AKG C12 = amazing!

Pill Thief and 1776

Last week I finished the mixing and production of two records. One of which is the upcoming Pill Thief full length! I’m very excited about this amazing blend of space rock with Detroit soul roots. The second is a killer record for the up and coming 1776. These guys are great songwriters with clever lyrics and some of the best guitar tones I’ve heard. I’ll post samples of each when they return from mastering.

Check out this lovely band. We are currently wrapping up a killer EP! More to come…

Farming

A few months ago I crossed paths with Beau Raymond when he asked me to do some work on the upcoming Mark Olson record he was working on. Shortly thereafter we learned that our production styles are complimentary and joined forces to make a record for Ingunn Ringvold’s Sailorine. We are currently in the studio working on a full length with Jen Stills!

MP and lil amp

I recently got a couple new toys for my arsenal of cool sound making tools. The first is the MPC1000. After loading all of my favorite samples in it (and creating new instruments – vocal, wurly 5ths, acoustic guitar, direct rat pedal guitar, etc.) I have come to realize how powerful and quick it is to have a dedicated device for sampling. And it syncs flawlessly with Pro Tools and/or the 2″ tape deck via midi beat clock!

The second piece is a custom. low watt, amplifier built locally by Twang n’ Tweed.

Here’s what the builder/designer had to say about the amp:

“The enclosure was originally a 1940′s laboratory volt meter type contraption. The circuit uses a directly heated cathode rectifier, cathode biased output tube, 12AU7 preamp tube, and a nice NOS choke filter for good voltage regulation. The input transformer is from a vintage 1950′s Alamo amp. The output tranny is one of many I have lying around and after much testing and comparison I coupled it with a no-name 50′s alnico speaker that made a good tonal partner. NOS vintage caps and other various parts add up to a sweet little monster amp. None of them are ever exactly the same parts build so they are all unique. I didn’t test the output wattage, but must be 5-7 watts.”

Danger Mouse and James Mercer

Yesterday I engineered a session with Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and James Mercer. I recorded Brian playing keys/organ/drum machine/piano/tamb and James playing acoustic guitar (in nashville tuning), bass and background vocals. It was amazing to work with two artists that I hugely respect.

New York Dolls

I had New York Dolls in the studio two nights ago for dinner, hanging, and recording on the Breathe Easy project. David Johansen didn’t make it, but Sylvain Sylvain and the rest of the crew were a blast to work with. Sylvain recorded some vocals in french. Yes!
